Alexander's World US Road Trip 2002: Columbus

This is the story of two friends travelling 3000 km in six days meeting a dozen online friends.

Columbus may not be the centre of the gay community in the good old U S of A but it does boast 23 gay bars. And it also boasts a number of wonderful HOWsters, including the current Poohbah himself, John.

When we arrived at John's house in downtown Columbus around 5:30, it was incredibly hot and humid, like something out of a Tennessee Williams play in the deep south. Naturally, it got even hotter when Duane entered the room. DJ and I had had the pleasure of meeting John and Duane in Toronto in the past; this was the first time we had the pleasure of visiting them on their home turf. A rainbow motif pops up in the house even when you least expect it; I will leave that to the reader's imagination to sort out.

Sharing the evening was Clif, whom neither of us had met in person, and Mike, whom I had met when he was visiting Toronto in October with Jerry. Jerry, hun, you missed a great evening. Our hosts made us a sensational, and suitably casual for a summer evening, bar-b-q cook-out. Conversation was casual, campy, refreshing and just a heckof a lot of fun. Mike wasn't able to join us for the barhopping later, but Clif did.

What to say about this awesome guy? Clif is a writer by trade and I think a perpetual teenager by choice. He's got an incredibly warm heart and has had more than his share of life's knocks. He has an endless supply of stories and is a born raconteur. It also felt incredibly satisfying being hugged by him. (Does it show?) We even danced a little later. A pity it was a Tuesday night, rainy, and not much going on in the clubs. On the plus side, I got carded four times.
Mike, as you can also see, provides very satisfying hugs. He was not able to join us after dinner but we did have a delightful time catching up again in person. This meant, of course, Mike missed Karioke Night at the Eagle, 80s videos at Union Station (Memo to Tina Turner: fix that hair, girl! "What's love got to do with it?" You ain't gettin' laid lookin' like that, babe!), and really a rather pleasant time dancing on the sidelines at The Pyramid (conveniently located on East Gay St.). Next time I am in Columbus, it'll be a weekend.
