This is the story of two friends travelling 3000 km in
six days meeting a dozen online friends.
Well, if we thought we'd seen rain already, we weren't
prepared for Philadelphia! The weather did not manage to
dampen our spirits and, as in all the other stops on our
journey, we met some wonderful folks and had a great time.
(Philly is the home of the Liberty Bell and it just
cracks me up that we got in so late we missed it.) Larry,
a founding member and part-time HOW Poohbah, was our lead
host. His friend Joe joined us and introduced us to a
delightful sing-along piano bar, Tavern on Camac. And Ray,
another HOWster, joined us this evening and would return
on the weekend in the Berkshires.

| Millenium Coffee House. More Than Just Ice Cream. 12th Air Command. You have to hand it to Philly -- they have some great names for establishments in the gay quarter. We had dinner at More Than Just Ice Cream and no one ordered any ice cream. Joe sang for his dessert at the piano bar down the street and after an hour or so the balance of us strolled over to Woody's. (My right arm is stronger from opening and closing the umbrella all night. Fortunately, that's already my strongest arm.) Woody's was pretty dead at this hour so we went in search of Bump!, a new Martini bar and restaurant with lifesize photos of incredibly gorgeous semi-nude men adorning the walls. DJ discovered a sour apple martini. I fell in love ... with more Skyy Citron and tonic. Or is it soda? |

We trundled over to Uncle's (fortunately I was wearing drip-dry apparel) and waited for 10 pm to roll round. Uncle's is a small bar-in-the-round with guest rooms upstairs. Very cosy. At the appointed hour, we returned to Woody's and headed upstairs to the dance floor where it was latin night. OMG. Was it ever. People were gathering but no one was dancing so our brave foursome got the ball rolling and danced up a storm. In minutes, the rest of the room joined us -- I am not sure whether it was how great an inspiration our dancing was or if they thought we needed some demonstration. In any case we had a ball. The evening ended too early and, after a tense half hour trying to retrieve DJ's car from the parking lot (the attendant apparently couldn't figure out how to start the car blocking ours), we followed Larry back to his condo where he graciously allowed us to crash for the night. |
