Alexander's World US Road Trip 2002: Pittsburgh

This is the story of two friends travelling 3000 km in six days meeting a dozen online friends.

Pittsburgh was our next stop. After a farewell breakfast Wednesday morning with Clif in John and Duane's dining room (we got up a little late and both of our hosts had gone off to work -- ah, the life of leisure we lead!), it was back to driving and studying maps. Incredibly, we managed to find Frank Lloyd Wright's stunning house, Falling Water, built on a waterfall deep in the middle of nowhere. (Pics to follow. It may sound redundant but it rained there too. Torrentially.) After some strategic cell calls, we arranged to meet our next hosts, Jeriamy and Billy, at the Sheraton Station Square around 6:30.

Jeriamy and I have been corresponding on ICQ for over two years and, thank gawd, he just turned 21 so he and his delightful friend Billy were able to take us on a tour of the downtown Pittsburgh bars. And yes, it was still raining. Pittsburgh is where the Showcase/Showtime TV series "Queer As Folk" is supposed to take take place but, trust me!, there is a LOT of artistic license going on. Liberty Avenue, while pleasant, is office towers (ok, and a few bars and porn shops, too). QAF is actually filmed in Toronto, sometimes literally outside my front door. "Toronto is a friend of mine. Pittsburgh, you are no Babylon." You can quote me.

Anyway, after a meal, in the rain, at The Cheese Cellar (and yes it *is* "cheesey"), the Fab Foursome headed out for a night on the town. In the rain. Wednesday night in Pittsburgh isn't a whole lot busier than Tuesday night in Columbus but we did manage to have a wonderful evening. We started at the Tuscany Cafe which is modestly queer and serves an awfully tasty Skyy Vodka Citron with Soda. The gogo boys at Images were a pleasant diversion but I have to say our hosts held my attention over the scantilly clad bois on stage. We dropped in briefly at The Saloon and then toured the legendary Pegasus. This is a pretty big bar/dance club which was in the middle of a fund-raiser for Pride Week. I danced with Jeriamy here, even though he is sure to deny it. (By the way, Billy, just exactly WHAT are you looking at?)
We drove across town for the final venue, a suburbanish place called New York New York which was pretty busy in the side bar and obviously a gay hangout. There was a piano bar (closed), a restaurant (closed) and a patio (closed). It was still raining like a bat out of hell. So we stayed inddors and closed the whole thing at 2 am, sipping on this and that, hanging out and getting to know one another. Somehow DJ took all the Pittsburgh pictures. Sorry about that! But he was there!
