Canada's Defences in Shambles
(Jan 7, 2003)

David Pratt, a Liberal backbencher for Nepean-Carleton and chairman of Canada's Parliamentary Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, complains that the Prime Minister's Office is unwilling to conduct a full review of Canada's defence and foreign policies which may risk Canada's relevance in international affairs.

Adoption Open Records Bill-77 Delayed
(Dec 13, 2002)

I am acquainted with a very successful businessman in the Eastern United States, a multi-millionaire some times over, and a father. I vented to him on the current situation here regarding Ontario's Bill-77 designed to open adoption records to adults. He was instrumental in his own US state for keeping records sealed. My letter follows.

A fictional story about a man, Jase, who is adopted, and gay, and seeks out his birth mother and in the process discovers a new meaning for 'brothers'. Jase tells what it is like to grow up gay, and adopted, and how he views the different men he encounters in his life as brothers.

About Birthdays And Ghosts
(May 17, 2002)

I turned one year closer to claiming an AARP membership card today. It rained most of the day. And I had time enough to get a haircut and some new highlights. Added splashes of red.

An Open Letter To Anne McLellan
(May 9, 2002)

Today, May 9, 2002, the federal government in Canada introduced legislation (An Act Respecting Assisted Human Reproduction) dealing with the handling of donated eggs and sperm and rules surrounding the rights of the children created by this process. It is the most chilling legislation in many years and takes its cues from the tragedy of adoption rules created in the 1920s.

Coming Out Gay At 16
(Feb 11, 2002)

The Internet can be a scary place and one hears stories of people chatting for months only to discover the person at the other end of the connection is not who he seems to be. But often times people are real and genuine. I encountered one young man reaching out desperately to be heard. He happened to dial me up. This is his story.

Male Bonding / Am I Gay?
(Jan 23, 2002)

This piece is really in two parts. First, a few thoughts about male bonding, the tribal comfort of men, about what closeness and intimacy is like with and without sex, a kind of primal core connection. Second, if you are wondering if you are gay, bi or str8, a quick and easy test that will make you think. It is about your fantasies and if you are honest about your reactions you might find yourself somewhere else on the Kinsey Scale than you expect to be. Enjoy!

The Times We Live In
(Dec 5, 2001)

I expect as an American Citizen you will not have any significant trouble other than lineups at the American staffed border checkpoints. I have actually heard nothing about the borders except by posturing politicians. Mainly gingoistic, xenophobic laced words of anger becoming ill advised policy.

About Names and Their Meanings
(Jul 15, 2001)

Most of us have one name, given at birth, which we keep for life. Those of us who are adopted have more. Some adoptees consider changing their names upon finding their birth names. I belong to an online adoption peer support group. Many of us do a schizophrenic dance in our message signatures; names before and after, names pregnant with meaning, emotion, baggage. It got me thinking.

Movie Review: Chocolat
(Feb 15, 2001)

Director Lasse Hallström's (My Life as a Dog, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules) latest offering seduces the viewer with pseudo-magic; it has the air of a favourite story retold, at once nostalgic and warming. Yet it's tempting to mutter something about empty calories -- for on reflection this film is not as good as it seems at first bite.
