James Allan Ross: Looking Inward

L a s t    W o r d s

Something's missing
something's lost
I don't laugh any more
could it be my innocence
has deserted me?

I can recall being happy
being in love with the world
everything I saw
was full of cheer and joy
I too was caught up by it

But now euphoria fades
happiness a ghost of past days
instead the spectre of death
looms demonically on the horizon
nightmarish ghouls hang above me
like vultures
greedily eyeing the fallen prey

But my corpse isn't fully drained
of all of its life yet
if only I could laugh
feel delight
coursing through my veins
bringing life
and staving off Satan's angels
a few moments more

But alas they won't wait
I've come too far along this road
when I gave up my friends
to become my own me
I lost more than life
I lost the ability to love
